Standard Missile - 3 (SM-3)

The Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) is a ship-based missile system used by the US Navy to intercept short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles as a part of Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. Although primarily designed as an anti-ballistic missile missile, the SM-3 has also been employed in an anti-satellite capacity against a satellite at the lower end of low Earth orbit during the Operation Burnt Frost mission.  The SM-3 is primarily used and tested by the United States Navy and also operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

As a member of the Boeing Development team for the SM-3 Block IIB missile, SSTi provided Navy shipboard platform expertise for Operational Concept definition, shipboard configuartion, and Aegis interface requirements.

As a member of the Aegis BMD Analysis Team, SSTi performed analysis, requirements assessment, reporting, and issue identification during  the following test events:

  • Flight Test Missions & Waterfront Integration Test (WIT)
  • Aegis Ashore (AA) Events
  • Formidible Sheild

SSTi conceived and developed the Missile Analysis Test Suite (MATS) & Missile Analysis Suite (MAS) of analysis tools to aid assessment of the AWS to SM-3 uplink and downlink communications.   SSTi developed the MAS Missile Data Analysis Report (MDAR) module to assess the performance of the SM-3 RF  communications link.
